1. Artha Dosham (Wealth/Money defect)
2. Nimitta Dosham (Cause/Instrument defect)
3. Sthana Dosham (Place defect)
4. Guna Dosham (Quality/Property defect)

1. Artha Dosham (The Defect of Wealth)
Meaning: Eating food prepared with ingredients bought using unrighteously or dishonestly earned money. We must only consume food bought with honestly earned income.
Story: A saint once went to his disciple's house for lunch. While eating, he noticed someone coming in and handing over a bag full of money to the disciple. After finishing his meal, the saint went to rest in a room where the disciple had kept that bag of money.
Suddenly, a wicked thought entered the saint's mind. He took some money from the bag and hid it in his own pouch. He then took leave of his disciple and returned to his ashram. The next morning during his prayers, the saint felt deeply ashamed and repented for his actions.
He realized that the corrupt food he ate at his disciple's house was the reason behind his wicked thoughts. Once the food was fully digested and expelled from his body in the morning, his mind became pure and clear again. He immediately took the stolen money back to the disciple's house, confessed everything, returned the cash, and asked, "What profession do you practice to earn your money?"
The disciple bowed his head in shame and replied, "Forgive me, Holy One! This money was not earned through righteous means." Eating food made from ingredients purchased with unrighteously earned money is known as Artha Dosham. It is highly important that we cook and eat food bought only with honestly earned income.

2. Nimitta Dosham (The Defect of the Cook/Association)
Meaning: The mindset of the cook affects the food. Cooks must have a pure mind, integrity, and a loving nature. Furthermore, insects, birds, animals, dust, or hair must not touch the food. Unclean food disgusts the mind. Similarly, if we eat food prepared/provided by wicked people, their negative traits will pass on to us.
[Story of Bhishma]
During the Kurukshetra war, Bhishmacharya was pierced by countless arrows and lay alive on a bed of arrows (Ampashayya) until the war concluded. The Pandavas, Draupadi, and Lord Krishna stood around him as he imparted profound wisdom and noble teachings to them.
At that moment, a question crossed Draupadi's mind: "If Bhishma is capable of thinking so wisely today, why did he fail to oppose Duryodhana on the day he ordered Dushasana to disrobe me?"
Reading her thoughts, Bhishma addressed her, "Mother! At that time, I was living under Duryodhana's patronage and consuming the food he provided. That food completely clouded my own intellect. Now, after being struck by arrows, living with a battered body, and going without food for so many days, every drop of that old blood has drained out of my body, leaving me purified. My mind has blossomed once again, allowing me to share these words of wisdom with you.
Eating food provided by people with wicked traits destroys a person's inner goodness, resulting in Nimitta Dosham.

3. Sthana Dosham (The Defect of the Place)
The place where food is prepared must have positive vibrations. Unnecessary arguments and disputes during cooking ruin the energy of the food. Meals prepared in places associated with conflict—such as battlefields, courtrooms, or public dispute grounds—are not beneficial for consumption.
Once, Duryodhana prepared a grand feast consisting of 56 distinct varieties of dishes and invited Lord Sri Krishna. However, Krishna declined his invitation and chose to go to Vidura’s humble home for a meal instead.
Filled with joy upon seeing Krishna, Vidura’s wife welcomed him warmly and attended to him. Overwhelmed by excitement and love, she hurriedly peeled a banana and, completely distracted by her devotion, accidentally handed him the banana peel instead of the fruit. Krishna accepted it and ate it with great joy.
Seeing this, Vidura looked at his wife in anger. Krishna intervened and said, "Vidura! I only seek affectionate love. Whatever is offered to me with true faith and devotion—be it a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water—I accept it with immense happiness." Therefore, whenever food is served, it must always be served with love.

4. Guna Dosham (The Defect of Quality/Property)
The nature of the food matters. We should strictly cook and eat Sattvic (pure, clean, and balanced) food, which fosters spiritual growth. Rajasic/Tamasic food (overly spicy, stimulating) entangles us in worldly illusions and fuels selfishness.

5. Samskara Dosham (The Defect of Preparation/Intent)
Depending on the culture/refinement of the people cooking the food, the defect is formed. This defect arises from the character, discipline, and energy of the person preparing the food. Meals cooked by a refined, pure-hearted person bring health and vitality, while food prepared by an undisciplined or resentful person brings unexpected ailments and diseases.
