  Shankukarna   took his second birth as Bahlika Raja in Dwapara Yuga and was born in Kuru Vamsa. He was the son of Pratipa and brother of Shantanu (father of Bheeshmaachaarya). Bahlika was a great devotee of Lord Sri Krishna, but still had to associate with Kouravas in the Kurukshetra war because of his alliance with Bheeshma and Dhritharastra. BAhlIka was a very pious king in dvApara yuga, due to circumstances beyond his control he ended up fighting against the pAnDavas. He wanted to die at the hands of BhIma so that he could take future births and serve him (Hanuma-Bheema-madhva) and so challenged him to a fight, though BhIma was reluctant to hurt a devotee of the Lord. He was ultimately slained in the war at the hands of Bheemasena (Vaayu Avathara) in the divine presence of none other than Lord Sri Krishna.
