DEEPAVALI - The Festival of Lights (Significance)

Legends behind the festival... We find several references to Deepavali festival in various Puranas. Popular legend behind this festival is that of killing of an Asura called Narakasura by Lord Sri Krishna and his consort Sathyabhama during Dwapara Yuga. We find this legend in Dasamaskhandam (10th chapter) of Sri Madbhagavatham. Narakasura also known as Bhoumasura was the son of Goddess Sri Bhoodevi (Goddess of Earth) and Lord Vishnu (Varaha Avathara). He was a demon King with Pragjyotishapuram as his capital. He was a mighty demon with lot of pride and vanity, known for his cruel and wicked ruling and atrocities on women and demi Gods. As an example of his atrocities he had even kidnapped 16000 royal maids and kept them under his captive. DEEPAVALI The Festival of Lights Deepavali is one of the most prominent festivals of Hindu religion celebrated across the country with fervor and gaiety by one and all without any discrimination of age, caste and creed. It is called as festival of Lights and we find people lighting fire crackers during the festival which is a special attraction. Rarity of this festival is that it is celebrated in the night unlike other festivals which are generally celebrated in the day time. Sri Vaamana Avathara Significance Sri Vaamana Avathara was fifth in the line of Dasavatharas of Lord Sri Maha Vishnu. This avathara took place during Treta Yuga before Sri Parashurama Avathara. Story of Bali Chakaravarthy (Sri Vaamanaavathara)

Focus of Sri Vaamana Avathara falls on the story of King Bali. Popularly referred to as Bali Chakravarthi or Maha Bali he was a Daitya (Asura) King in the lineage of Prahlada (Bhaktha Prahlada). He was the grand son of Prahlada and son of Virochana. Prahlada, his grand father was an ardent and coveted devotee of Lord Sri ManNarayana for whose sake the Lord took the avathara of Lord Narasimha. Sage Sukrachaarya (Daitya Guru) was his preceptor helping King Bali in all his endeavors. Bali was a mighty and valorous Asura who had conquered all the three worlds including Heaven and Indra had to surrender to him. He was very arrogant, proud and egoistic.
