Image
On the day of Vijaya Dasami (Dasara) we come across a tradition especially in Karnataka, Andhra where people visit in the evening Shami Vruksha situated on the outskirts of their town or village and make circumambulations to the Shami tree. In fact Dharma Saastra prescribes that one should visit Shami Vruksha on the day of Viajaya Dasami during Aparaannah kaala. After that they also exchange the leaves of Shami Tree with their friends and relatives as a symbol of goodwill on the day of Vijaya Dasami reciting the following sloka..... शमी शमयतॆ पापं शमी शत्रु विनाशिनी । अर्जुनस्य धनुर्धारी रामस्य प्रियदर्शिनी ॥ ಶಮೀ ಶಮಯತೇ ಪಾಪಂ ಶಮೀ ಶತ್ರು ವಿನಾಶಿನೀ |   ಅರ್ಜುನಸ್ಯ ಧನುರ್ಧಾರೀ ರಾಮಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಿಯದರ್ಶಿನೀ || శమీ శమయతే పాపం శమీ శత్రు వినాశినీ అర్జునస్య ధనుర్ధారి రామస్య ప్రియదర్శినీ Samii samayate paapam Samii satru vinaasinii Arjunasya dhanurdhaari Raamasya priyadarsinii In Maharastra on the day of Vijaya Dasami people worship Aapta tree and exchange its...

Kunjarugiri Durga Devi (Pajaka Kshethra)

Image
Popularly known as Durgabetta and Vimanagiri; this famous Durga temple is within the vicinity of the holy Pajaka kshethra the birth place of Sri Madhvacharya the founder exponent of Dwaita/Tattvavada philosophy. It is about 10 km from Udupi Ksethra. The temple is located on a hill which looks like an elephant (Kunjara) hence the name Kunjarugiri. It is an ancient temple where Goddess Durga in Chaturbhuja (four armed) was installed by none other than Lord Parashurama the dynamic incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Sri Madhvacharya used to visit this temple daily during his childhood.  Transcendental magnificence and grace of Durgadevi is reflected in the idol at Kunjarugiri temple with the Goddess  holding Shanka (conch) and Chakra (discus) in the upper hands and Dhanus (bow) and Trishula (trident) in the lower hands. Association with Lord Parashurama and Jagadguru Sri Madhvacharya adds prominence to this place Kunjarugiri a popular Durga Kshethra to be visited especia...

Ghaatha Chaturdasi (Mahalaya Pithru Paksha)

What is Ghaatha Chaturdasi? 14th thithi (Chaturdasi) of Pithru Paksha during Bhadrapada Maasam is earmarked exclusively for all those who had accidental or unnatural death viz. snake bite, suicide, murder, killed with weapon, accident (road, train, air, including fire/drowning), killed in war, natural calamities etc. Such Sraaddha (for those who had accidental/unnatural death) on the day of Chaturdasi should be performed as Ekoddishta (only one Pinda) and not for Varga Thraya. For example if Father had died in accident or had unnatural death, only Father will be called out but not Pithamaha & Prapithaamaha. If two or all the three in Varga Thraya had such death then it should be performed for two/three accordingly. Therefore Sarva Pithru Paksha Sraaddha should not be performed on this day even if Pithru thithi happens to be Chaturdasi. However, those who are doing daily Sraaddha/Thila tharpana during Pithru Paksha can do it even on Chaturdasi days also. If Paksha Sraad...
