HAYAGREEVA JAYANTHI
Sravana Sukla Pournami (Full Moon day in the Lunar month Sraavana Maasam) is reckoned as Hayagreeva Jayanthi the day Lord Vishnu incarnated as Hayagreeva and restored to the Universe the lost Vedas and the day generally coincides with Upakarma. Haya means Horse and Greeva means Neck; Hayagreeva means the Horse headed Supreme God of knowledge and wisdom. Hayagreeva also means the one who has an auspicious and beautiful throat (Hayagreeva) from where all the divine knowledge (Vedas) has articulated/have been proclaimed. Lord Vishnu in His incarnation as Hayagreeva has killed the demons Madhu & Kaitabha to restore the lost Vedas stolen from Lord Brahma. We find a reference to this in Sri MadBhagavatham in 2nd and 7th Canto. Madhu-Kaitabha, are personification of passion and ignorance and Lord Vishnu as Hayagreeva is the Supreme God of Knowledge and destroyer of ignorance.
