What is Udupi Paryaya?

Literally Paryaya means turn; rotation; alternative; succession etc... In the context of famous Udupi Sri Krishna temple; Paryaya, one of the three biggest temple events (other two being Sri Krishna Janmaashtami and Sri Madhva Navami) has acquired lot of religious and spiritual significance especially in Madhva fraternity. Sri Madhvacharya, founder of Dvaita/Tattvavaada philosophy was instrumental in establishing the temple of Lord Sri Krishna at Udupi and installation of the idol of Bala Krishna; that was worshiped during Dwapara Yuga by Rukmini Devi the prime consort of Lord Sri Krishna. Procuring the idol was a miracle and forethought of Sri Madhvacharya, third in the lineage of Hanuma-Bheema-Madhva. Sri Madhvacharya not only installed the idol but also appointed eight of his prime disciples to take forward his legacies and to have continuity to the worship of Lord Sri Krishna by rotation. Dhanur Vyatheepaatha Yoga

What is Vyatheepaatha Yoga? Yoga is one of the components (limbs) of Panchanga (Thithi; Vaara; Nakshathra; Yoga; Karana) which is different from Aanandaadi Yogas or Gouri Panchanga that we usually come across in a Panchanga. Basically, Yoga represents the sum of the longitudes (angular relationship) of the Sun and the Moon for a given lunar day. Like Nakshathras (constellations) there are 27 Yogas having duration of 13.20 degrees each that keep occurring daily on a cyclical basis in a specific sequence starting from Vishkambha and ending with Vydruthi Yoga. In electional astrology (muhurtha) though Yoga is given secondary importance, some of them, especially Vyatheepaatha; Vydruthi etc. are outright rejected for auspicious events. Vyatheepaatha literally means great calamity or prone for sudden mishaps or reversals. Vyatheepaatha Yoga is the 17 th one in the list of 27 Yogas.
