SHADGUNA PATNI (Subhashita 2/2026)

कार्येषु दासी, करणेषु मंत्री,

भोज्येषु माता, शयनेषु रम्भा ।

रूपेषु लक्ष्मी, क्षमया धरित्री,

षट्-धर्मा युक्ता, कुल-धर्म पत्नी ॥

This famous Sanskrit Subhashita (wise saying) describes

the "Shadguna Patni"—the six roles or qualities of an ideal wife as envisioned in ancient Indian literature.

​Karyeshu Daasi: In work, she is like a servant (dedicated and diligent in managing the household).

​Karaneshu Mantri: In counsel, she is like a minister (wise, providing intelligent advice in times of need).

Bhojyeshu Maata: In feeding, she is like a mother (nurturing and serving food with selfless love).

Shayaneshu Rambha: In intimacy, she is like Rambha (the celestial nymph; being a charming and pleasing companion).

​Rupeshu Lakshmi: In beauty and grace, she is like Goddess Lakshmi (bringing prosperity and elegance to the home).

​Kshamaya Dharitri: In patience, she is like the Earth (bearing challenges with immense tolerance and calmness).

​Shat-dharma Yukta Kula-dharma Patni, translates to: "One who possesses these six virtues is a true wife who upholds the family tradition."

​While this verse reflects the societal structures of ancient times, its core message highlights the multi-faceted strength of a woman—not just as a partner, but as a pillar of wisdom, patience, and care for the entire family.
