KUMBHA MELA (Nasik) - 2015
With Jupiter (Bruhaspathi) already
transiting in the zodiac sign Leo (Simha Raasi); Sun entering into Leo sign (Simha Sankramana) on 17th
August 2015 (midnight) it marks the beginning of once in 12 years famous river
festival of Godavari river called Nasik Kumbha Mela.
When Jupiter enters Leo sign (14.07.2015)
it marks the beginning of Godavari Pushkara and when Sun joins Jupiter in Leo
sign it is reckoned as Kumbha-Mela at Nasik in Maharashtra State. Nasik
Kumbha-Mela will be held up to 25th September 2015.
Ocean of humanity (men; women; sadhus;
saints) from all walks of life irrespective of caste; creed; region;
participate in this Hindu religious and spiritual fair (Kumbha Mela) in millions of numbers.
This time it is being held at Nasik (Maharashtra State) on the banks of the holy
river Godavari. Previous Kumbha-Mela at Nasik was held in the year 2003.
Right at the foot of Godavari’s birth place (Brahmagiri in Sahyadri ranges
of Western Ghats) lays the famous Shiva Kshethra Tryambakeshwar (near Nasik)
where Lord Shiva manifested in the form of a Jyothirlinga. It is a rare Shiva
Linga which is unlike others, is in small pit with three openings symbolizing the
three eyes of Lord Shiva. It is the first place of sojourn for Godavari which
constantly pours on top of the Jyothirlinga of Lord Shiva.
Pouranically Nasik
(Tryambakeshwar) is one of the four holy places (spots) where few drops of
'Amrutha" (Divine Nectar) spilled in the episode of Ksheera Sagara
Madhanam. The other three are Haridwar, Prayaaga (Allahabad); and Ujjain. These
are the four places where Kumbha Mela is held.
Nasik is also known as Panchavati Kshethra. It is strongly believed that
Lord Sri Rama had spent part of his Vanavaasa (sojourn) at this place on the
banks of river Godavari in Dandakaranya. This is also believed to be the place
where Lakshmana chopped off the nose/ears of Soorpanakha (sister of
Raavanaasura) and the place has derived its name Nasik from this episode.
