There is a confusion on when Sankranti should be celebrated this year. Is it on the 14th or the 15th? Please advise which date should be followed as per Madhwa sampradaya and why?
SCHEDULE OF BHOGI-MAKARA SANKRAMANA – UTTARAAYANA PARVAKAALA – 2014…
In general calendar dates for Bhogi & Makara Sankramana are 13th and 14th of January every year and the day of Makara Sankramana marks the beginning of Uttaraayana (as per South Indian Calendar). A day before Makara Sankramana marks the last day of the solar month Dhanurmasam that is celebrated as Bhogi festival.
Accordingly, Parvakaala of Uttaraayana is observed on the day of Makara Sankramana ie. 14th of January itself provided, transit (Sankramana) of Sun takes place before Sunset. In case Sun’s transit into Makara raasi takes place after Sunset, Uttaraayana Parva-Punya kaala is observed on the next day after Sunrise. Then it will be observed on 15th January. In such case, as per Dharma Sindhu first five Ghatis (1 ghati = 24 minutes) after Sunrise is to be considered as the most sacred time (Parva-Punya kaala) and accordingly sacred deeds prescribed have to be performed during that time.
This year (2014) Makara Sankramana (transit of Sun into Makara Raasi) is effectively taking place after Sunset on 14th January and according to the above concept; Bhogi festival (last day of Dhanurmasam) need to be observed on 14th January and Uttaraayana Parva Punya kaala to be observed on the next day ie. 15th January 2014.

As per Uttaradi Mutt Panchanga up to 10.30 am; As per Raayara Mutt Panchanga up to 11.14 am; As per Mysore Panchanga up to 10.23 am; As per Dharma Sindhu up to 5 Ghatis from Sunrise (please check local calendars for Sunrise time)
In case of any variance viewers may chose timings according to their sampradaya…

Thank you for the detailed explanation. What I am hearing is, as per Drigganita, sankramana happens on 14th afternoon and hence sankranti should be celebrated on 14th. Do our panchangas follow Drigganita or Poorva ganita? Please advise
Yes, as per Drigganita, Sankramana is taking place in the afternoon but, majority of the Almanacs including Uttaradi and Raayara Mutt Panchangas are quoting Sankramana time in the evening after Sunset. Hence, Parvakaala aacharana to be on the next day after Sunrise, since it is difficult to perform the prescribed rituals during evening/night time. Some of our Mutts (Uttaradi Mutt and Raayaara Mutt) follow Surya Siddhantha Panchanga.
