Rahu-Kethu often gives the most impactful and influencing results both on individuals and also on the mundane surface. Though they are natural malefic planets; not always they produce malefic results. It depends on their placement both in Raasi and Navamsa chakra, vargottama position, and association with other planets. In general Rahu-Kethu gives the results of their sign dispositer or lord of the constellation in which they are placed if they are alone and to some extent that of Saturn (Rahu) and Mars (Kethu) as the case may be. If they are conjoined with any planets, their results would be benefic or malefic depending on the rulership of the conjoined planet.

They are supposed to produce good results and material fortune when they occupy Upa-chaaya (3, 6, 10 and 11th houses from lagna/Moon sign). While 11th house is said to be the best position for Rahu to occupy in a birth chart; 6th house is said to be the best position for Kethu to occupy.  When they are alone and occupy their favourable signs especially Vrushabha (Taurus); Virgo (Kanya); in case of Rahu and Scorpio (Vruschika); Pisces (Meena) in case of Kethu they confer undiluted happiness and prosperity.

All other houses (1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th 9th, 12th) they give negative results unless otherwise supported by strengths in the birth chart. These results will fructify during Rahu-Kethu major dasa or their sub-periods. If Rahu or Kethu dasa is associated with Saturn’s transit periods viz. Sade-Sath, Ashtama Shani or Ardhaashtama Shani natives may experience adverse results discharging bad karma of their previous births.

Some of the negative implications of Rahu-Kethu
from their placement or association are…

Kethu in Lagna the native will have deformation of the body and weak constitution; lazy/morose temperament. While Kethu in lagna is not welcome; Rahu in lagna is not always bad. Rahu alone in lagna without any affliction especially in the signs of Vrushabha, Mithuna, Karkataka; Kanya, Simha and Makara can confer Raja Yoga on the native.

2nd house (domestic front) or 4th house (house of general happiness) will mar the domestic peace and happiness in life; also causing aberrations in marital front. Rahu-Kethu in 2nd house can create aberrations in speech; diseased face; ear/mouth related problems; defective eyesight; bad temperament;

Rahu in 4th house can give foreign stay and settlement, foreign education, will have evil intentions; Kethu in 4th house the native may lose ancestral properties or loss of properties; stay away from motherland; lazy temperament; sudden changes and reversals.

Rahu/Kethu in 5th house (Puthra bhaava) is significant in matters related to progeny. Placement of, especially Rahu in 5th house is referred to as Sarpa Dosha by way of curse (Sarpa-saapa) from previous births. This should not be confused with Kala Sarpa Yoga. Rahu in 5th house either alone or aspected by or conjoined with Mars or Saturn, or Rahu in 5th house in Marsian signs (Aries/Scorpio) or Rahu associated with Puthrakaraka Jupiter, causes aberrations and obstacles in progeny front like delayed progeny, loss of children, abortions etc.

Rahu-Kethu associated in any way with 7th house; 7th lord; Venus (Kalathra kaaraka) by placement or aspect or constellation, give rise to aberrations and obstacles in marital front.  If conjoined with or aspected by Mars and or Saturn, it produces adverse results and may even mar the marital life.

Association of Rahu/Kethu with Mars in 7th or 8th house either by placement or aspect; Rahu/Kethu in 6/8 position (Shashtaashtaka) with Mars is not welcome; will lead to adverse results during their major periods/sub periods. Similar is the case when associated with Saturn, Moon and Sun.

Rahu – Kethu in 8th house gives malefic results; detachment from near and dear; quarrelsome; unwarranted conflicts with spouse as well as with public; vicious; unscrupulous; angry temperament; prone for accidents and injuries; loss of discrimination; mean associations; bad thoughts; troubled by many ailments; diseases in private parts; mental disorders if associated with Moon; Placement of Rahu or Kethu in 8th house is undesirable that makes the diagnosis of ailments complicated.

Rahu in 9th house the native will have nagging problems in the domestic front; will be of loose morals; indulge in unrighteous actions; hates his father; abuse God and religion. Kethu in 9th house; the native will have wicked thinking; indulge in sinful actions, haughty temperament, conflicts on trivial matters, will be deprived of his father etc.

Rahu/Kethu in 10th house gives opportunity of overseas job/career.  Rahu in 10th house if well placed can give excellent career opportunities and progression. They will be bestowed with innovative brilliance in whatever field they are. Rahu has great affinity for invention, research and invisible things. Though materialistically benefic planet Rahu in 10th house can also make the native religiously and spiritually inclined; lead a philosophical life becoming a monk. Rahu in 10th house gives an opportunity for Ganga Snaana; meritorious and sacred deeds; Rahu in 12th house can give opportunity for foreign travel during Rahu Dasa. Kethu in 10th house gives opportunity for entry into some of the rare fields.

Rahu in 12th house either alone or in association especially with Mars or Saturn gives adverse results like perversions, illicit affairs, and delinquent tendencies. While Rahu in 12th house is not welcome; Kethu in 12th house is likely bestow upon the native spirituality being the Moksha karaka and 12th house being the Moksha sthana.

Miscellaneous

Rahu said to be responsible for psychiatric disorders and diseases of the mind especially when conjunct with Moon the Manokaraka, the native will suffer from mental derangement; pessimistic tendencies; hallucination split personality etc.  If such conjunction is taking place in 6th or 8th house and Saturn also joins it may produce more adverse results.

Conjunction of Rahu-Kethu with Sun and or Moon will be like an eclipse that will obscure the significations of Sun/Moon and spoil the fruits of the house in which they are located. Those born during eclipse are likely to suffer from mental disorders or physical disability. If they are conjoined with or aspected by Saturn or Mars it will give adverse results.

Though Jupiter (Guru) is a natural benefic planet, conjunction with Rahu is called Guru Chandala Yoga that will spoil the fruits of all other good yogas in the chart. Jupiter must be weak and debilitated. It leads to non confirmation, atheistic tendencies and abusive expressions.  No regard for spiritual values and the native will have perverted views.

Association of Rahu + Saturn especially in Marsian sign (Aries/Scorpio) is likely to cause divisive influence; family wrangles and strains during the period of such combinations. Association of Rahu with Mars and Saturn in lagna is undesirable and malefic that will produce adverse results. It can manifest negative aspects of extreme ego; pride and selfishness.

Kaalasarpa Yoga: Placement of all the planets including lagna within the axis of Rahu and Kethu is known as Kaalasarpa Yoga. This is not be confused with Sarpa Dosha or Sarpa Yoga (malefic planets in three kendras). It is said that no prominence has been give to Kaalasarpa Yoga in classical texts of astrology. According to celebrated author of modern astrology Dr. B.V. Raman it is not very effective in Kali Yuga; not of much importance in individual charts.

Caution: Above results are only illustrative and not exhaustive. They are only indicative. They should not be applied as it is verbatim, as the results may vary depending on various other factors and strengths in the birth chart.

For those whose birth stars are Rahu related (Ardra, Swathi and Satabhisha) their Vimshottari starts with Rahu dasa and for those whose birth stars are Kethu related (Aswini, Makha and Moola) their Vimshottari starts with Kethu dasa. Rahu dasa will be for a period of 18 years and Kethu dasa will be for 7 years.
