Rare Temples of Lord Hanuman
(Honnalli – Bellary)

Most of us would have heard of King Janamejaya in the lineage of Pandavas who was the great grand son of Arjuna the hero of Mahabharatha fame. Janamejaya’s father Pareekshit (son of Abhimanyu) died of a snake bite due to the curse of a Divine Seer. In order to take revenge for his father’s death Janamejaya conducts a great Sarpa Yaga where many snakes died including the innocent one. Later it is said that on the advice of Divine Seers in order to get rid of the dosha of killing innocent snakes, Janamejaya goes on a pilgrimage and installed the idols of several Deities. In the process it is said that he had also visited the present area of Bellary district and installed idols of Lord Hanuman.

One such place where Janamejaya said to have installed the idol of Lord Hanuman is Honnalli near Bellary according to the local priest. Rarity of this temple is that we find symbols of Moon, Sun, Star, and Shanku depicted on the left hand top corner of the Hanuman idol which is unusual. It is said that Sri Vyasarayaru had visited this temple and there is a small portrait of Sri Vyasarayaru carved at the bottom of Dhwaja Sthambham. Other temples of Lord Hanuman said to have been installed by the King Janamejaya which were later consecrated by Sri Vyasarayaru are at Madalagatti in Bellary district and Nuggekeri near Dharwad in Karnataka state.

This ancient temple of Lord Hanuman at Honnalli is in dearth of patronization from religious leaders and philanthropists. Honnalli is located about 10 km from Bellary town slightly deviated on the Bellary-Bangalore route. From local town one can reach this temple by an Auto and the charges would be approx Rs.150-200 two way. Sri Hanumad Vratham that falls during Margasira Masa is celebrated at this temple in a grand manner.
