Introduction….

Kaala-Ganana (reckoning of time) happen according to the specific time set by the Kaala Niyaamaka; the governing lord and the presiding Deity of the eternal time Lord Sri ManNaarayana; the divine law maker and law giver. Time is controlled by Kaalapurusha, presiding Deity of the eternal Time, Lord Vishnu, the Kaala. He is the creator of Time and also the one who causes repetition of Time. All entities in universe come under the purview of the Time without any exception including Lord Brahma. Time is reckoned as Lord Vishnu who is Kaalaatma the soul of Time; Kaala-Swaroopa the form of Time. Naaraayana Upanishad describes Lord Vishnu as Time – “Kaalascha Naaraayanah” Time is arising out of Lord Sri ManNaaraayana.

Hindu sages describe time as cyclic and an endless process of creation, preservation and dissolution. Universe is cyclically created and destroyed. Sacred texts (Puranas) have conceived the Time or Kaala as beginning-less or endless and there is no break in the continuity of the Universe in some form or the other. Even during Pralaya (Deluge) the Universe is not totally destroyed but merges into its un-manifest cause from which it emerged at the time of its creation.

Hindu religion and philosophy which strongly believes in Vedas has clearly spelled out the time element of the universe at different levels. Several sacred pouranic texts like, Bhaagavatha Purana, Vishnu Purana, Maha Bhaaratha, Matsya Purana, Vaayu Purana, Bhagawadgita etc. have discussed about Hindu cosmology. Understanding of time in Hinduism is as old as the Hinduism itself. What modern scientists/astronomers have invented about Time was revealed by the great Hindu Seers ages before.  While most of the non Hindu cultures base their cosmologies on familiar units such as few hundreds or thousands of years, Hindu concept of time based on Vedic scripts believes in immeasurable period of time lasting billions and trillions of years.  In the later part of this dissertation let us try to understand; how to reckon the Time from Hindu perspective? What is its arithmetic?

Broadly speaking at macro level the Time is measured in units of Kalpa, Manvanthara and Yuga.

What is Kalpa? its significance...
Kalpa is called as Vedaanga; a limb of the Veda Purusha. It is one of the six disciplines of Veda called Shat-Saasthras viz. Siksha, Kalpa, Vyaakarana, Nirukta, Chandassu, and Jyotisha. It is an ancient science that involves one to carry out the injunctions; various types of spiritual practices, rituals etc. coming under its province/territory.

In terms of TIME, Kalpa means an Aeon, immeasurably long period of time in Hindu cosmology equivalent to 432 crores (4.32 billion) of years. It is the duration of half a day in the life of Lord Brahma that is equivalent to 1000 Mahayugas; each Maha Yuga having duration of 4320,000 human years. Bhagawadgita defines a day of Lord Brahma as equivalent to 1000 Maha Yugas - Sahasra Yuga paryantham ahar-yad brahmano vidhuh. Two such Kalpas constitute one day and one night in the life of Lord Brahma.

A Kalpa is further divided into 14 Manvantharas, each one lasting 306.72 million human years. Each Kalpa is ruled by a succession of 14 Manus and the period of their reign is called a Manvanthara. A Kalpa (day duration of Lord Brahma) consists of a period of 1728,000 years called Aadi Sandhi followed by the period of 14 Manvantharas plus (+) Sandhi Kaalas together equivalent to 1000 Maha Yugas.

Thus half a day (Kalpa) of Lord Brahma is equivalent to…

14 (Manvantharas) x 71 (Maha Yugas) = 994 Maha Yugas + Sandhi kalas equal to 6 Maha Yugas = 1000 Maha Yugas.  Sandhi Kala is arrived at as follows;

For 14 Manvantharas (14) sandhikala periods equivalent to the age of 14 Krita Yugas = 1728000 x 14 = 24192000 + 1728000 (Aadi Sandhi period) = 25920,000 /4320000 years = 6 Maha Yugas.
One day (Kalpa) of Brahma is also divided into 10000 parts called Charanas equivalent to 1000 Maha Yugas of 10 charanas each. Each Maha Yuga consists of 10 charanas; Krita Yuga (4); Thretha Yuga (3); Dwapara Yuga (2) and Kali Yuga (1) charana.  Each Charana comprises of 432000 human years X 10000 = 432 Crores (4.32 billion) years.

In terms of number of years, a Kalpa will be of 1000 Maha Yugas x 4320000 = 432 crores (4.32 billion) of human years. A night of Brahma is of equal duration of another 1000 Maha Yugas = 432 crores years. Thus a full day (one day + one night) of Lord Brahma is the period of Two Kalpas equal to 2000 Maha Yugas = 864 crores (8.64 billion) of human years.

According to Matsya Purana there are 30 Kalpas cyclically getting repeated. They are…

Swetha, Neela-lohita, Vamadeva, Rathanthara, Rourava, Deva, Bruhat, Kandarpa, Sadhya, Eesana, Tamah, Saraswatha, Udaana, Garuda, Kaurma, Narasimha, Samana, Agneya, Soma, Maanava, Tat-puman, Vaikunta, Lakshmi, Savithri, Aghora, Vaaraaha, Vairaja, Gouri, Maheswara, and Pitr-Kalpa.

These nomenclatures vary in different sacred texts and there is no unanimity in the list. According to Vaayu Purana a different list containing 34 names are given. Currently we are in Swetha Kalpa in which Lord Vishnu had taken incarnation as Varaha (great Boar) hence, aptly called as Swetha Varaha Kalpa.

What is Manvanthara? its significance...

Each day of Lord Brahma (Kalpa) is further divided into 14 sub-divisions called Manvantharas’ with each Manvanthara named after its presiding deity called Manu who will be in charge of preservation and protection of the universe during his period.  List of Manvantharas are…

Ø  Swayambhuva
Ø  Savarni
Ø  Swarochisha
Ø  Daksha Savarni
Ø  Uttama
Ø  Brahma Savarni
Ø  Tamasa
Ø  Dharma Savarni
Ø  Raivatha
Ø  Rudra Savarni
Ø  Chakshusa
Ø  Deva Savarni
Ø  Vaivaswatha
Ø  Indra Savarni

In simple terms Manvanthara is a bigger sub-division of TIME (Kalpa) reckoned as duration (Avadhi) of Manu (Manu + Anthara=Manvanthara). Duration of each Manvanthara will be for a period of 71 Maha Yugas (Chatur-Yugas) with each Maha Yuga of the duration of 4320000 human years. Therefore total duration of each Manvanthara will be 71 x 4320000 = 306.72 million human years. After each Manvanthara there follows a Sandhi Kala (period) of 1728000 human years of the duration of a Kritha Yuga.

At the end of every Manvanthara there will be a Pralaya (deluge) known as Manvanthara Pralaya and the cycle gets repeated and new Manus’ comes into existence. Each Manvanthara will have a set of Saptha Rishis and Indra (Lord of Heaven). Currently we are in the cycle of seventh (7th) Manu called Vaivaswatha Manvanthara named after Vaivaswatha Manu son of Sun God called Vivaswatha.  Current Indra is Purandara. Indra is a status given to the Lord of Heaven who is the leader of the demi-gods whose term will be for duration of a Manvanthara.  Future Indra in the next Manvanthara will be Bali (Bali Chakravarthi). Similarly, Saptha Rushi is a status given to the great sages whose term will be for a period of one Manvanthara. Each Manvanthara will have a set of seven sages called Saptha Rushis. In the ongoing Vaivaswatha Manvanthara they are, Athri; Vasishta; Kaasyapa; Goutama; Bharadwaja; Viswaamithra; and Jamadagni.

These Manvantharas had commenced on specific lunar days called Manvaadi. According to Dharma Saastras these fourteen Manvaadi days as per Hindu lunar calendar are…

Ø  Chaitra Sukla Thrutheeya and Pournami (2)
Ø  Jyeshta Sukla Pournami (1)
Ø  Aashada Sukla Dasami and Pournami (2)
Ø  Sraavana Bahula Ashtami (1)
Ø  Bhaadrapada Sukla Thrutheeya (1)
Ø  Aaswayuja Sukla Navami (1)
Ø  Kaartheeka Sukla Dwadasi, Pournami (2)
Ø  Pushya Sukla Ekadasi (1)
Ø  Maagha Sukla Sapthami (1)
Ø  Phalguna Sukla Pournami, Amaavaasya (2)
What is Yuga? What is its significance?
TIME is further subdivided into units of smaller duration called Yuga. As per Kalpa pramana, Yuga is classified into four types’ viz. Krutha Yuga; Tretha Yuga; Dwapara Yuga and Kali Yuga of descending duration in the ratio of 4:3:2:1 with each Yuga having the duration shorter than its previous one. Krutha Yuga is also known as Sathya Yuga. Duration of these four Yugas in terms of human years is determined as follows…
  • Ø  Krutha Yuga (1728000 years);
  • Ø  Tretha Yuga (1296000 years);
  • Ø  Dwapara Yuga (864000 years) and
  • Ø  Kali Yuga (432000 years);

What is Maha Yuga?

Four Yugas (Krutha-Tretha-Dwapara-Kali) collectively is known as Maha Yuga or Chaturyuga having a duration of 4320000 human years and 71 such Mahayugas (Chaturyugas) is equivalent to one Manvanthara (306.72 million human years).

What is a Divine Year?

Time is also measured in terms of Divine years. One Divine year is assumed as equivalent to 360 human years. For the purpose of this arithmetic 360 human days is considered as equivalent to one human year. Therefore, one Mahayuga of 4320000 (12000 x 360) human years duration equivalent to 12000 Divine years will make one Divine Yuga or Deva Yuga comprising of…
  • Ø  Krutha Yuga (4800 divine years) +
  • Ø  Tretha Yuga (3600 divine years) +
  • Ø  Dwapara Yuga (2400 divine years) +
  • Ø  Kali Yuga (1200 divine years)

As a result, a Kalpa (1000 Mahayugas/Deva Yugas) will be equivalent to 1000 x 12000=12 million (1.20 Cr) divine years or 432 Crores (12000000 x 360) human years.
Yugas (Krutha; Tretha; Dwapara and Kali) are associated with Dharma or moral virtues (morality). Composition of Dharma in Krutha Yuga (Sathya Yuga) called as Golden age will be fully virtuous; in Tretha Yuga called as Silver age it will be 3/4th virtuous; in Dwapara Yuga called as Bronze age it will be half (½) virtuous; and in Kali Yuga known as Iron age or Black age it will be 1/4th virtuous and 3/4th of sin. Thus there will be gradual deterioration from Yuga to Yuga in terms of Dharma (virtue) as well as the longevity of human beings. The Yugas become progressively worse in terms of morality that will have an influence on human actions.

As per Kaala-Ganana based on the concept of Kalpa, Manvanthara, Yuga; currently we are living in Kali Yuga after passing through Krutha; Tretha and Dwapara Yugas of 28th Mahayuga (Chaturyuga) in Vaivaswatha Manvanthara of Swetha Varaha Kalpa. As per Yuga Pramana the span of Kaliyuga is 432000 human years and we have passed through 5115 human years since the beginning of Kaliyuga in 3102 BC.

Who are Sakha Karthas of Kali Yuga?

Sakha is basically referred to an era or a period. As per legends; in Kali Yuga six Kings will create new eras (Sakhas) which are named after them. They are…

Yudhishtira Sakha (Dharmaraja): Started in the year 3102 BC continued for 3044 years.

Vikrama Sakha: Started in 57 BC continued for 135 years;

Salivahana Sakha (current period): Started in 78 AD; will continue for 18000 years.

Vijayabhinandana Sakha (future coming): His calendar will last for 10000 years.

Nagarjuna Sakha (future coming): His calendar will last for 400,000 years.

Kalki Sakha (future coming): His calendar will start at the closing stages of Kali Yuga and will run for 821 years before the Kali Yuga comes to an end.

As per Sakha pramana currently we are in the Salivaahana Sakha in which 1936 years have elapsed since its commencement in the year 78 AD.

Having understood the concept and arithmetic of Kalpa, Manvanthara, and Yuga, Sakha ...

Reckoning of Time...
as per Lord Brahma’s life cycle…

According to Bhagawad Geetha a day in the life cycle of Lord Brahma is defined as equivalent to a duration of 1000 Maha Yugas (Sahasra Yuga paryantham ahar-yad brahmano vidhuh) that is called Kalpa. According to Mahabharatha it is said that 12 months of Lord Brahma’s existence is equal to 360 days that constitute his (Brahma) one year and 100 such years is his life time and that is the life cycle of the Universe. As per Vedamaana, life span of Lord Brahma is said to be 100 years called Brahma Kalpa also known as Para. Fifty years of Lord Brahma are supposed to have elapsed. Currently first day (day time) in the 51st year of Lord Brahma known as Swetha (Varaha) Kalpa is running through.

Reckoning the Life span of Lord Brahma

1000 Maha Yugas = 1 Kalpa = ½ day of Lord Brahma =
432 crores of years;
2000 Maha Yugas = 2 Kalpas = 1 day (24 hours) of Lord Brahma = 864 crores of years;
30 such days of Brahma = 60 Kalpas = 30 x 864 crores of years = 259.2 billion years;
12 such months (1 year = 360 days) of Brahma = 720 (360+360) Kalpas = 12 x 259.2 billion yrs = 3.1104 trillion yrs
50 such years = 1 Para-ardha = 36000 Kalpas = 50 x 3.1104 trillion years = 155.52 trillion years = half of Brahma's life
2 such Paraardhas = 100 years of Brahma = 72000 Kalpas =311.04 trillion years = Brahma’s life
As per above arithmetic life span of Lord Brahma will be
311.04 trillion human years = 72000 Kalpas…

Relationship between Sankalpa
and the Hindu Time element…

Some of the terms used in Sankalpa sloka that we recite daily during Sandhyavandana or before commencement of any divine prayer or ritual contain the time element viz. Aaadhya Brahmana, Dwiteeya Parardhe, Swetha Varaha Kalpe, Vaivaswatha Manwanthare, Kaliyuge, Prathama Pade, Salivahana Sakhe. In these words there is reckoning of the current date as per Vedamana since the birth of Lord Brahma. As such, Hindu time element is embedded in Sankalpa (San+Kalpa)

Aadya Bramhane Dwiteeya Parardhe; first half of the life time of the current Brahma is over and we are in the 2nd half called Dwiteeya Parardhe; in the 51st year of Lord Brahma (50 years of Lord Brahma is equal to 155.52 trillion human years)

Swetha Varaaha Kalpe; that means we are currently in the first day (only day) called Swetha Varaaha Kalpa in the 51st year of Lord Brahma; the day (Kalpa) in which Lord Vishnu took the form (incarnation) of Varaaha (great Boar)

Vaivaswatha Manvanthare; In Swetha Varaha Kalpa (1st day of Lord Brahma) after passing through six Manvantharas out of 14; we are currently in the 7th Manvanthara called Vaivaswatha Manvanthara.  In terms of number of years after taking into account the sandhi Kalas, we have passed through 185.2416 crores human years (4320000 x 71 x 6) + (1728,000 x 7) during the previous six Manvantharas.
Ashtavimshatitamey Kaliyuge - Kali Prathama Charane; In the current Manvanthara (Vaivasvatha) we have passed through 27 Maha Yugas out of 71; currently passing through the 28th Maha Yuga. Again in this 28th Maha Yuga after passing through Krutha, Thretha and Dwaapara Yugas; we are currently in Kali Yuga in its first quarter after passing through 5115 years (as on 31.03.2014).  As per scripts it is said that Kali Yuga commenced in the year 3102 BC. Counting from the beginning of Kalpa it is (185.24 + 11.67 + 0.39 + 0.005) =197.30 crores human years since commencement of creation by Lord Brahma.
Bauddhavathare: in the time when Lord SriManNaaraayana has taken birth as Buddha…

Saalivahana Sakhe: further reckoning down based on the concept of Sakha, after passing through the Yudhishtira and Vikrama Sakhas we are currently in Saalivaahana Sakha; 1936 years since its beginning in 78 AD.

For more information on the concept, glory and significance of Vedic Sankalpa please click on the link given below…

Tabulation:

Tabulating the above arithmetic taking the year 2014 as the base the Hindu Time is reckoned as follows in terms human years…
311.04 Trillion Human years – Life span of current Brahma
155.52 Trillion Human years since the origin of current Brahma
197.30 Crores (1.97 billion) years since the beginning of the Swetha Varaha Kalpa (time since creation started)

12.06 Crores years since beginning of Vaivaswatha Manvanthara…
38.88 lakhs years since beginning of 28th Maha Yuga
5115 years since the beginning of the present Kali Yuga…
1936 years since the beginning of Salivahana Sakha…

Namostvananthaya Sahasramuurthaye
SahasraPaadaakshi Sirorubaahave
Sahasranaamne Purushaya Saswathe
SahasraKoti Yugadhaarine Namah

Salutations to the Infinite (Lord Sri ManNaaraayana) the one who has manifested as innumerable number of forms, who has innumerable feet, eyes, heads, arms, one who has innumerable number of names, who is an eternal person and who holds thousands of crores of Yugas which are uncountable.

It is said and believed that Lord Hanuman is going to be the future Brahma after the expiry of the term of the current Brahma.

Sri Krishnaarpanamasthu

PS
For the above arithmetic a year has been assumed as equal to 360 days
One billion = 1000 millions = 100 crores
One trillion = 1000 billions = 100000 crores

  1. Dear Krishna,

    Can you kindly elaborate the significance of a sakha? Especially, when you say that the current one is Salivahana Sakha and it lasts for 18000 years, does it mean people will use referring to the calendar using his name until such period?

    warm regards,
    RV

  2. Saka is basically referred to as an era or a period. For the purpose of the Almanac Panchangam different calendars have been named after different personalities who have influenced the era. For example Kali Yuga is influenced by Kali hence it is called as Kali Yuga Saka. In North India it is named after the great emperor Vikramaditya and hence called Vikrama Saka. In South (especially in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa) it is named after the great emperor Goutami Putra Satakarni (Salivahana) and hence called as Salivahana Saka. Similarly the English calendar is named after Christ and hence it is called as Kreesthu Saka (Gregorian calendar).
    Sakas were basically Mlechha (foreign) tribe grouped along with Yavanas and others who were later known as Scythians. These Sakas and Yavanas were also connected with Mahabharatha war where they were sided along with the Kouravas. It is said and believed that Lord Krishna had destroyed and vanquished these sakas and Yavanas.
    It is also said that Mahabharatha mentions the name of a Dweepa called Sakadweepa inhabited by Sakas to the north west of ancient India which is to the East of the great Meru Mountains.
    Coming to the Salivahana Saka in particular it is said that history indicates, Goutami Putra Satakarni (Salivahana) belonging to the Sathavahana dynasty had defeated Vikramaditya and to commemorate his victory the period or era has been named after him. It is also said that the era supposes its events to be connected with a defeat of the Sakas by Salivahana and to commemorate the same the era is named after him called Salivahana Saka. He was ruling the South and parts of North India. Since then the period or era called as Salivahana Saka also known as Saka Era became very popular.
    The great Indian Astronomer Aryabhatta dating of Kaliyuga in terms of Saka era also indicates the popularity of the Saka era by then itself.
    If you tune the All India Radio before beginning of its first session in the morning, the time element with respect to the Saka era is spelled out in its broadcast. In fact Govt. have adopted Salivahana Saka calendar as its official Calendar beginning with Chaitra Masam by reforming and standardizing it in the year 1957.
    Due to the high influence of Salivahana on Hinduism it was prophesized that Indian Hindu calendar named after him will be in use for a long time through out its era called Salivahana Saka.

  3. Thank you for the excellent and very lucid explanation.
    - i heard that vikramaditya was granted a boon of having a lifespan of 1000 years, for ruling his kingdom (which got doubled to 2000 yrs due to the wit of his brother Batti).
    - However this defeat by Salivahana is a surprising news!

    Thanks for your good remarks. There is no unanimity of opinion on the date of Vikramaditya. The one that is referred to in the post in whose name the Vikrama Saka came into existence lived for 117 years.

  5. Hi Sarmaji,

    Very nice explanation. I got confused with one thing here. As you mentioned there are 30 kalpas. which are repetitive. We are in the Shwetha varaha kalpa. But how we can say current running is 51st year for brahma.? We can interpret as 52nd year in the life of brahma as well right.? May be creation and destruction for one year(dat is in 51st year) in the life of brahma already got over.? The sloka says it is dwithiya paradhe(second half) shwetha varaha kalpe. But it doesn't mention anything about which year in the second half. Right.?

  6. As per the time element a Kalpa is reckoned as only half a day in the life of Lord Brahma. Two such Kalpas will become one day for Him. In the cycle of 30 Kalpas, Swetha Kalpa is the first one. 24 such cyles of 30 kalpas each have to be completed before Lord Brahma enters into 52nd year. Accordingly it is presumed as 51st year.

    Our Sankalpa sloka that we recite in Hindu religion is the basis for this. This sankalpa that is being uttered by every one has percolated down from ancestors and taught by forefathers in every family since time immemorial.

    Thanks and regards

  7. Thanks for great explanation. I have one question
    about mahabharath and ramayanam and puranas that in which maha yuga these are all happened.All these vedas and puranas talks with respect to current Maha Yuga ? As we know it is cycle process.In the past history of maha yuga's none of them mentioned about Kaliyuga incidents.
    can you please explain more about it ?

  8. Dear....

    The story of Epic Mahabharatha and Lord Sri Krishna has very much occurred in the current Maha Yuga that is the 28th Maha Yuga of the current Vaivaswatha Manvanthara when Lord Sri Krishnaavathara had taken place. Historicity has also been traced with astrological dates of birth and Niryana of Lord Sri Krishna that has happened 5238 years back. Lord Sri Krishna lived on this Earth for 125+ years. You can get this information from Srimad Bhagavatha Purana. The Epic Ramayana is said to have taken place in Thretha Yuga of the 24th Maha Yuga of the current Manvanthara.

    Sage Veda Vyasa will be present in every 3rd age(Yuga) of the quartet (Dwapara Yuga) to take up the divine literary works, reorganize and edit the scripts (Vedas and Puranas) and to inculcate the spiritual knowledge. Puranas what we are reading and listening have to be assumed as the latest versions edited by Lord Veda Vyasa. So let us not worry about the past Maha Yugas.

    So far as the Kali Yuga is concerned it is said that the current Kaliyuga has commenced with the Niryana of Lord Sri Krishna. The stories of Pareekshit that is covered in Srimad Bhagavatha Purana happened after the onset of Kaliyuga. The stories of Lord Sri Venkateshwara of Tirumala, His marriage with Goddess Padmavathi Devi popularly known as Srinivasa Kalyana had taken place in the current Kaliyuga. You can get information about Srinivasa Kalyanam and Tirumala temple from Bhavishyottara Purana or from Sri Venkatachala Mahatyam. Lord Buddha’s (one of the Dasaavatharas of Lord Sri Vishnu) story has taken place in the current Kaliyuga only. You can read Bhavishya Purana and Bhavishyottara Purana for more information on Kaliyuga.

    Thanks & Regards

  9. Dear Shri Bhargavasarma,

    Under the head 'Salivahana Sakhe' of your script, you calculated the total time elapsed since the origin of the current Brahma to be 157.49 Trillions ( or 157.49 x 10^12) human years and the time elapsed since the beginning of the Swetha Varaha Kalpa (time since creation started)to be 197.30 Crores or ( 1.973 x 10^9) years.

    Since 50 Brahma-years of Lord Brahma = 155.52 x 10^12 earth-years and the Swetha Varaha Kalpa is the first day after completion of 50 Brahma-years by Lord Brahma, the total time elapsed since the origin of the current Brahma or the age of Lord Brahma = (155.52 x 10^12 + 1.973 x 10^9) earth-years = 155.521973 x 10^12 or 155.521973 trillion earth-years and not 157.49 trillion years as calculated by you.

    It will be appropriate if you will add in your script that for the above calculation, one earth-year has been assumed to be equal to 360 days (and not 365.24 days as per present revolution of the Earth around the Sun. Also you may mention 'earth-year' in stead of 'human year' in your script to make the script more specific.
