PITHRU YAGNA - THARPANA VIDHI
Ø THARPANA VIDHI
In the daily schedule (nithya karma) of a devout Hindu; Tharpana
is one of the accepted modes of oblation performed to the deities; sages and pithrus that we generally
come across during Brahma-Yagna.
Apart from giving tharpana during nithya karma; the maxims
prescribe Pithru tharpana to be given on specific days which forms part and
parcel of Pithru Yagna.
The ritual Tharpana should be performed only by those who are
eligible.
An individual gets eligibility to perform Pithru tharpana only
after getting inducted into the concept of Upanayana (Dvija) and after the
death of father.
Pithru tharpana should always be performed with Thila (black
sesame seeds) except during Brahma Yagna when it should be performed with
water.
Tharpana should always be performed wearing Dharbha Pavithra.
In lieu of Dharbha Pavithra one can also use silver ring.
Pavithra should be worn to the right hand ring finger. After completing the
ritual Pavithra should be removed.
Pithru tharpana/Pinda pradhana should always be performed facing
south direction with Yagnopaveetham in apasavya position.
Tharpana should not be given on the day of Ekaadasi aacharana.
Similarly, during the period of Asoucha also tharpana should not
be given.
Water used for Aachamanam should not be used for giving
tharpana.
Water from Kalasha paathra mixed with Thulasi/Nirmaalya Theertha
should be used for giving Pithru tharpana.
On the day of Pithru Tharpana one should take only one time
meal. Night meal should be avoided.
In case of Sraaddha Thithi including Mahalaya, meals should be
avoided on the previous day night also.
Tharpana and/or Pinda Pradhana have to be done in the order as
per the given list.
Tharpana and Pinda Pradhana should be performed only to the
deceased and not to the living even though they figure in the eligible list.
Tharpana should not be given to the concerned Pithru till
completion of one year after the death.
Ø ShanNavathi…
(Specified days/occasions for
Pithru (Thila) tharpana)
Sacred texts prescribe Thila tharpana to be given to the Pithrus
(forefathers) exclusively on 96 specific days in a year called ShanNavathi. They are…
It is said that by performing Shannavathi sraaddha, Pithrus gets
pleased/satisfied for 2000 years.
Apart from the above one is required to perform Thila tharpana
to forefathers during Parvakaala on the following days…
During Parvakaala; Mahalaya Pithru Paksha; visit to Theertha
Kshethra; Thila tharpana should be given to Sarva Pithru (all eligible
forefathers); on all other specified days’ tharpana should be given to Dwaadasa
Pithru.
During Manvaadi, Yugaadi, Vyatheepaatha, Vaidhruthi, days
tharpana is required to be given during Poorvaahnakaala;
on Sankramana, Eclipse, Uttarayana, Dakshinayana days during
Parvakaala as mentioned in respective Panchanga.
on the days of Amaavaasya during aparaahnnakaala;
On the day of Pithru/Maathru thithi (annual ceremony) Thila
tharpana should be given only to the concerned Varga Thraya and not to the all.
If any of the above mentioned Shannavathi (96) days coincide
with the days of Parvadina; Tharpana need not be given twice as later one
(Parvakaala) supersedes former in ascending order of
in order of importance.
Logic is on a single day tharpana should not be given more than
once.
If any of the above mentioned 96 days (excluding Amaavaasya;
Poorvedyu; Ashtaka; Anvashtaka) + Uttarayana/Dakshinayana falls on Ekaadasi
day, tharpana should not be performed. Instead, Pavamana-Sooktha/Pithru-Sooktha
parayana should be made;
Strictly speaking during SankrunMahalaya (performing Paksha
sraaddha for only one day during Paksha maasa) Tharpana is to be given on the
next day. But, in practice it is being given on the same day when Sraaddha is
performed.
In case of Theertha/Kshethra Sraaddha, Tharpana is given first
and then Sraddha is performed.
Ø Items required for Tharpana:
Ø Pithru Tharpana procedure:
Before performing Tharpana, proper Sankalpa sloka should be
recited after performing Aachamana and Pranayama facing east.
Depending on the location, day, time and occasion Sankalpa sloka
may differ slightly.
Ø Typical example of Sankalpa sloka (for Pithru Paksha)
Praacheenavithi (Yagnopaveetham in apasavya position)
(Above one is an example for Mahaalaya Pithru Paksha Tharpana.
For other occasions it may be modified suitably)
Ø Tharpana procedure…
Tharpana should be given with water + black Sesame (Thila)
seeds.
Pithru tharpana should always be performed with the right hand.
While performing Tharpana each Pithru has to be addressed with
their name and Gothra.
Male Pithrus are addressed as Sarma and female Pithrus as Dhaam
suffixing their names.
The word Asmath should be spelled before the name and Gothra
after the name.
> For example:
in case of Father it should be pronounced as Asmath Pitharam;
Yagnappa Sarmaanaam Kaasyapa Gothram and
in case of Mother as Asmath Maatharam; Yagnamma Dhaam Kaasyapa
Gothraam.
In case of Dwaadasa Pithru; three generations should be
addressed as Vasu, Rudra and Aaditya roopa and all others should be addressed
as Vasu Roopa.
Ø Typical example of Tharpana sloka (Pithru Varga Thraya)
After completing Tharpana for all forefathers following sloka
should be recited and give tharpana with all the remaining Thila.
[Reciting above sloka Yagnopaveetham should be dipped in Kalasha
Paathra and then squeezed so that drops of water falls in Tharpana pathra]
Ø Samarpana…
Achyuthaaya namah-Anantaaya Namah-Govindaaya Namah!
Above procedure may also be followed for performing Pithru
tharpana on other specified days as mentioned above by appropriately making
alterations in Sankalpa manthra.
(Sloka manthras mentioned are as per Madhva sampradaya).
Thats it for doing pithur tharpana? It is really useful information. Can you please give Sankalapa for those residing outside India (I think we need to change Bharada Kande, etc) I am in USA, I know little bit but I am not sure it is right for Madhvas....Thanks
ReplyDeleteDear Sri Vijay
ReplyDeleteIf you can do this much that is enough. As far as I know sankalpa is prescribed only for performing rituals within Bharatha Khanda (Indian Sub-continent). Thanks for visiting the blog and finding the article useful.
Best regards

Sir, thanks for the content. Can we also follow the same process / mantras for (a) daily tharpana and (b) daily mahalaya tharpana.
ReplyDeleteAlso pl advise whether we can make do with a plain 'golden ring' instead of 'pavithram'.
If dharbhas are a must can we buy them and store at home for a month or so?
Dear Raja,
ReplyDeleteDaily tharpana forms part of Nithya karma that is called as Brahma Yagna where we perform Deva, Rishi, and Pithru tharpana. Daily Pithru tharpana should be performed only with water and there will be slight variation in the sankalpa manthra and the process. Whereas for daily Mahalaya tharpana during Pithru Paksham, procedure what is already mentioned should be followed. In this regard you may follow your sampradaya or consult your purohit.
Pavithram made with Gold can be used for nithya karma. For specific rites like Amavasya, Pithru Shraaddha and during Pithru Paksham etc.. it is always preferred to use pavithram made with Dharbha (Kusa Grass). You may get dharbha from the stores but, you must know how to make the pavithram. Better you take the guidance of your purohit in this regard.
Thanks and regards

Respected Sir,
ReplyDeleteI want to do pithru tharpanam on the coming Dhanur Vyatheepatha yoga day ( 9 Jan).
Can the above tharpanam procedure be followed for that?
If yes, then I have a few questions:
1) I don't have access to pavithram or darbha. So is there any alternative?
2)Is there any need of pinda pradhana (i.e., is it part of tharpanam procedure)?
3)Is there any need to recite additional mantras /slokas apart from what you have mentioned above? Or all the minimum required mantras/slokas specified in the above post?
Thanks
Dear Srinivas
ReplyDeleteYou can follow the above mentioned procedure with slight modification in Sankalpa manthra and Samarpana manthra as given below.
Dwadasa Pithrunaam Akshaya Punya Lokaavaapthyartham Dhanur Vyatheepatha Sraaddhanga Saddhyah Thila Tharpanam Karishye
Samarpana
Anena Maya, Dhanur Vyatheepatha Kruthena, Dwadasa Pithru Thila Tharpanena SriMadhJanardhana Vaasudevah Priyathaam Preetho Varado Bhavathu, Sri Krishnaarpanamasthu
In the absence of Pavithram or Dharbha you may use your ring.
There is no need for Pinda Pradanam, only Thila Tharpanam is sufficient.
There is no need for any other additional manthras. You have to perform Pithru tharpanam to Dwadasa Pithru.
Before performing Pithru tharpana you have to give Arghya to Lord Vishnu with the following manthra
Vyatipaata Argya mantra
vyateepaata mahaasatwa sarvapaapapraNaashana |
sahasrabaahO vishwaatman gRuhaaNaarghyaM namOstu tE |
vyateepaata namastEstu namastE vishwamaMgala |
viShNuchakraswaroopaaya namastE divyatEjasE ||
After giving Pithru tharpana Lord Vishnu to be prayed with the following sloka
VyatIpaata Prarthana mantra
viShNupriya vyatipaata pitRuNaamanRuNaprada |
pitRuNaaM mama vaikuMThaM prayachCha bhagavanmama ||
twatprasaadEna mE bhaktirastvEvamanapaayini |
j~Jaana vij~Jaana vairaagyaM prayachCha bhagavan mama ||
thanks and regards

Can you advise how to do a pithru srartham outside India. No priest available.
ReplyDeleteDear Srinivasan,
ReplyDeleteIn a given situation when it is not at all possible to perform Pithru Shraddha due to circumstances beyond one’s control, one can adopt one of the following...
Perform Pithru Thila Tharpanam
Observe fasting on that day
Give Saaka/Paaka Dana to a Brahmin in a temple along with Dakshina.
Feed a Cow with grass/plantains
When nothing is possible, pray fore fathers and offer a sincere Namaskara.

Namaskara Shri Bhargava Sarma avare:
ReplyDeleteFrom your blogspot I understand that one can use a silver ring in the absence of a Pavithra (the one made out of a darbha grass). I am in a situation where I dont have access to either of them. The only materials I have are black Til seeds, Lota for water and Uddharini. I do have some darbhas that i can arrange in the recommended pattern (12 points where one can drop the water and til seeds) but I dont know how to make a Pavithra.
Is it ok to do the tarpana without wearing anything on the right hand ring finger ?
Would appreciate any suggestions
I am told that the Amavasya on Friday of this week is the most sacred. Is that right ?
Best regards
Namaskaara;
DeleteIn a given situation when you don't have pavithra (dharbha/sliver/gold ring) - ignore it and continue performing the rites (thila tharpana) as said.
Amaavaasya is called Pithru thithi and when it is Mahaalaya Amaavaasya it is given lot of significance. Incidentally coming Friday is Mahaalaya Amaavaasya. You may like to read the related posts from the link given below...

Namaskara
DeleteJust a note to thank you that but for your message I may not have performed the Thila Tarapan on Friday. I am glad to have done it and I think your email basically reinforced my belief that the anusandhana to perform a good deed over-rides every other laukika circumstantial impediment.
What is important is sraddha; bhakti; sincerity. That’s why the dictum says "Sraddhaaya Charitam Sraaddha"; the one that is required to be performed with utmost devotion; sincerity and attention/care. It doesn't mean; one would flout rules and take shelter always under exceptions. All said and done it may not be difficult to procure at least a silver ring.

DeleteI wish to know how to perform samkalpa shradha on annual death ceremony day of father/mother due to in ability of physical fitness and non availability of purohit
ReplyDeleteGood Information and Thanks to Mr. Bhargava garu.
ReplyDeleteMy husband's mother us alive but not father. He gives tharpana for father, grand gather and great grand father every amavasya.on mahalaya amavasya should he do it for all the ancestors?.
ReplyDeleteIn general on the day of Ammavaasya only to Dwadasa Pithru but, during Mahalaya Pithru Paksha it should be Sarva Pithru.
DeleteIn case Mother is alive; Sraaddha/Tharpana should not be performed to Pitaamahi (paternal grand-mother) and to Prapithaamahi (paternal great grand-mother);
Thanks for writing this blog how to do tarpanam at home
ReplyDeleteNamaskara sir, Can you post the PDF for complete vidhana of Dwadhasha Pitru Tarpana on Amavasya days and what changes to be done in sankalpa during Uttarayana/Dakshinaayana, Elicpse.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot. Is there any particular Vidhi with respect to performing Thila Tharpana in the event of a close relative (e.g., Mathru Bhagini Pathi or Mathula Pathni)? Is this limited to being in the place or the event itself?
