Significance of KANYA MAASAM

In Sanatana sampradaya we find two types of calendars being followed viz. Solar Calendar known as Sauramana and Lunar calendar known as Chaandramana. In Solar Calendar the months derive their names based on the transit of Sun in a particular zodiac sign and in Lunar calendar it is based on the constellation (Nakshatra) occurring (at/nearer) on the full moon day (Pournami). We have 12 houses in the zodiac starting from Aries and ending with Pisces. Movement of Sun from one sign to the other in the zodiac is reckoned as Sankranthi or Sankramana. The period between two successive solar transits (sankramana) or the time taken by Sun to pass through a zodiac sign is known as Soura or Solar month. One complete cycle of Sun around the zodiac starting from Aries and ending with Pisces is known as Solar year. According to Sauramana when Sun transits into a zodiac sign that month is denoted with the name of that raasi/sign. For example, when Sun transits into Aries (Mesha Raasi) it is known as Mesha Maasa. Solar calendar will be starting from Mesha Maasa and ending with Meena Maasa. All Sun transits (Surya Sankramana) are Parvakaala. Among the Sun transits known as Surya Sankramana, certain transits are given special significance. For example, Mesha Sankramana – Beginning of Solar New Year; Karkataka Sankramana – Beginning of Dakshinayana; Kanya Sankramana – Pithru Paksha; Dhanus Sankramana – Beginning of Dhanurmasa; Makara Sankramana – Beginning of Uttarayana; Mesha Sankramana (Transit of Sun into Mesha Raasi) and Thula Sankramana (transit of Sun into Thula Raasi) are called VISHUVAT Punyakaala; Solar month KANYAMAASAM [when Sun is transiting the zodiac sign Kanya (Virgo)] is dear to Paramaatma as well as to Pithrus. Solar month Kanya Maasam is the sacred month Bhagawan Vishnu (Sreenivaasa) descended on Tirumala Kshethra in the constellation of Sravana nakshatra coinciding with which, preceding nine days is celebrated as World famous TIRUMALA SRIVARI Bramhotsavam. Almost on parallel days another famous Nine day festivals called SharanNavarathri - DeviNavaratri is celebrated during Kanyamaasam. KanyaMaasam is also the sacred Solar month Sri MukhyaPraana (#VaayuDevaru) took His third Avathara in Kaliyuga as MADHVA (Hanuma-Bheema-Madhva) So far as Pithrus are concerned...
