DaAsa literally means a servant; Daasyam is one of the nine modes of devotion (Navavidha Bhakti) that are paths to liberation.

Sri Purandara Dasaru is an epitome of Daasyam; serving for the cause of God.

Staying very much with his family Sri Purandara Dasaru led a life of renunciation and asceticism with total dedication to Lord Sri Hari.

Known as Navakoti Naaraayana (wealthy person), Purandara Daasaru (Srinivasa Nayaka) was a success story of a rich & miserly person turning into a highly spiritual Saint composer.

He earned much money and lived only to earn it, but eventually gave away all his wealth to become a devotee of Lord Sri Hari consequent to a divine incident. “Navakoti Naaraayana became a Naaraayana Bhakta”

A contemporary and a disciple of Saint Sri Vyaasarajaru & a great devotee of Lord Vishnu; Sri Purandara Daasaru (1480-1564 AD) a central figure in Haridasa literature is stated to have composed more than 475000 devotional songs in Kannada and dedicated his works to Lord Vittala. Many of his compositions (songs) are believed to have been lost and only around 1300 songs are available.

His compositions known as Suladis/Ugabhogas reveal his spiritual life, devotion, detachment, his thoughts and wisdom.

The themes of Sri Purandara Dasara songs are varied from....

episodes of Bhagavatha, Ramayana that inspire Bhakti,

glory of different incarnation of God,

analysis of the good & evil aspects of man,

code of conduct to be adopted by pious man etc...

His works are called Purandaropanishad that reveal the essence of sacred scripts in simple language (Kannada) useful to a common man.

Sri Purnadara Dasaru is believed to be an incarnation of Sage Naarada (Naaradaamasha Sambhootha)

It is a coincidence that Sage Narada was Guru of Prahlada Raayaru whose incarnation was (Vyaasa Raayaru);

Sri Sripadarajaru, Sri Vyasarajaru, Sri Vadiraja Theertharu, Sri Vijayeendra Theertharu, Sri Kanaka Dasaru; Sri Krishna Devaraya were some of the great personalities who were contemporaries of Sri Purandara Dasaru;

Purandara Daasaru considered as greatest among the devotees of Lord Sri Hari according to his preceptor Sri Vyaasaraajaru who said "Daasarandare Purandara Daasarayyaa…."

Originally hailing from a place called Purandara Ghad (near Pune) in Maharashtra, Sri Purandara Dasaru settled down and lived along with his family at Hampi in Karnataka during Vijayanagara reign.

Pushya Bahula Amavaasya (New Moon day) in Madhwas’ calendar is marked as Purandara Daasara Aaraadhana at Hampi (Karnataka); believed to be the day Sri Purandara Daasaru; father of Haridaasa movement left his mortal life.

Sri Puranadara Dasaru - Sri Vijaya Dasaru - Sri Jagannatha Dasaru and Sri Gopala Dasaru together are called Daasa Chatushtaya - the four stalwarts of Haridasa tradition, who played a significant role in spreading the philosophy of Hari sarvottama - Vaayu Jeevottama;

Govt. of India (Postal Department) released a special postal stamp and postal cover in honour of Sri Purandara Dasaru in the year 1964 commemorating his 400th anniversary.
