(08.10.2014)
(Kethugrastha –

{Khagrasa Chandra
Grahana}
A total
lunar eclipse is going to be witnessed on 8th of October 2014 on the
lunar day of Aaswayuja Sukla Pournami (Full Moon day). It is going to be a Total Lunar Ecliplse (Khagrasa

the eclipse starting before Moonrise (Grasthodaya).
This eclipse
is visible in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific and Americas (North &
South) with a duration of 3hrs and 20 minutes while the totality (total phase)
lasting for an hour. In India this eclipse is visible only in certain places
where the Moon rises before the eclipse ends. Eclipse is going to occur more or
less at the same time according to the local standard timings. Eclipse is visible in India mostly in Eastern and North-Eastern regions. Some of the places indicated where Eclipse is visible are Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Vizag, Vijayawada, Bhubaneshwar, Tirupathi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Chandigarh. In Karnataka state Eclipse is not visible.
From the
Hindu religion and spirituality point of view, Eclipse related austerities like
Vedha, Snaana, Tharpana etc. need to be observed only in those places where
eclipse is visible. At places where it is not visible there is no need to
observe the eclipse related austerities.
Hence, please check the local Moonrise timings and follow accordingly.
Astrologically,
this eclipse is occurring in the constellation of Revathi Nakshathra in the
zodiac sign Pisces (Meena Raasi) where incidentally Kethu is transiting. Mercury is the star lord for Revathi
constellation.

What is to be done during Eclipse
time?
Any Eclipse time is sacred and
entire period of Eclipse is known as Parva Kala (most sacred time). Any
sacred rituals or rites performed during Parvakaala will derive more merits
than those performed during ordinary times. Hence, don’t waste the Eclipse time
with materialistic pursuits and activities. Eclipse is the most opportune time
to perform Snaana (sacred bath) before and after the Eclipse; Prayer;
Punascharana of Upadesa Manthras (like Gayathri manthra), Pithru Tharpana;
Charity. Chanting of Vedic manthras/sacred stothras during eclipse will ward
off the negative energy that gets activated during eclipse and protects from
all negativity.
